UNESCO Cities of Design

Turkey’s largest city Istanbul has been the center of numerous civilizations, cultures and international trade throughout history and it has numerous inspirational sources in terms of its traditional crafts, forms of production, and innovative design ideas with its multi-layered cultural heritage. Istanbul hosts different organizations about creative industries, especially in the field of design. With the aim of increasing “design awareness”, solving global design challenges and creating solutions, and improving the design potential of Istanbul; many events are organized such as Istanbul Design Biennial, Turkey Design Week, Eco-Design Conference and the Istanbul Fashion Week.

Istanbul is a part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network since October 2017 and has been designated as a “Design City” by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. An essential topic of this subnetwork is how the UNESCO Cities of Design define themselves and how they want to cooperate and share information.
