Durul Bakan worked as a truck driver for a long time. However, he had always dreamt about having a more cheerful job. He also adds that he is good at dreaming. After selling his truck, he went to a sculpture workshop at Antalya but he couldn’t find what he was looking for. He started walking on seasides and canyons to think. Bakan collected woods while he was walking around. Beauty and shapes of the woods affected him.
Bakan started to make sculptures with wood. He was nailing wood pieces together to make horses, bulls, eagles, and other animal figures. Many businesspeople bought Bakan’s works and his reputation spread.
His works are on display in other countries as they are in Turkey, like Greece and UAE. Bakan implies that anatomic observation is one of the key requirements to his process. He doesn’t see making sculptures as a job. And he says “making sculptures is like playing and having fun for me.” Durul Bakan doesn’t have any education about sculptures. He just uses his imagination and ambition.
