UNESCO Cities of Design

Art and math worked together as a couple this time to create interesting artwork. The Russian couple Andrey Abakumov and Ani Abakumova made portraits from thousands of lines of thread with an algorithm Andrey created. The algorithm allows Ani to use threads in all possible colors to form some of the famous portraits such as Mona Lisa, The Girl with a Pearl Earring, and so on.

In this project, Ani was the artist responsible for physical artworks; Andrey was working on the digital aspects and calculations.

Each artwork is made using only colored thread, which is carefully attached to nails that line the circumference of the image set. the multilayered composition, comprising of overlapping hues and tones of thread, eventually come together to form each of the facial characteristics. More than 8,000 lines of threads — spanning roughly 4 kilometers — are used to create each portrait. however, ani and Andrey are planning to increase the scale of their projects, and also accept personal portrait commissions as well.
