UNESCO Cities of Design

Bisa Butler has studied fine arts at Howard University. When she was in college, she began to use fabric in her paintings and she continued using quilting, to protect her daughter from toxic materials and fumes, as she explains in a video interview.

Now, she creates portraits of everyday people with draws from an array of vibrant patterned fabrics. She often groups figures together into strong silhouettes and avoids using representational colours; instead she uses layered jewel-toned hues to form the skin of her African-American subjects.
