Turkey has countless famous artists. Their creativity and imagination represent Turkey all around the world. Today we will take a look at prominent Turkish women painters. They have important places in Turkish art history.

1) Mufide Kadri

Mufide Kadri was born in 1889. She was very talented in music and painting even in her early ages. Famous Turkish painter Osman Hamdi Bey saw her works and he couldn’t believe that these were painted by a young girl. They summoned Mufide Kadri and she painted in front of Osman Hamdi Bey, after that he was amazed by her talent. With his guidance, Mufide Kadri got an education in arts from Halil Pasa and she became the first woman painting teacher of Turkey in early ages. Unfortunately, she passed away at the very young age of 22.

2) Mihri Musfik

Mihri Musfik was one of Turkey’s first female painters. She was famous for her portraits. Musfik draw portraits of many famous figures including Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. After famous poet Tevfik Fikret’s death, Musfik made a mask inspired from his face. That was the first mask of her in Turkey. Mihri Musfik moved to the USA and attended many exhibitions. She passed away in the USA in 1954, at age 68.

3) Aliye Berger

Aliye Berger made her paintings on different papers. Besides the pattern and oil painting, there are works of black and white in intertones in the engraving printing technique. She was the first engraving artist of Turkey. Her artworks are sometimes fantastic, sometimes realistic.

4) Sabiha Bozcali

Sabiha Bozcali is the first artist who worked on industrial product design. She painted some facilities besides her landscape paintings. Bozcali was accepted as the first female illustrator of Turkey.

5) Sukriye Dikmen

Sukriye Dikmen has a young girl and adult woman portraits. Woman figures of Dikmen are very artsy works that they usually draw on plywood, with borders, certain eyes, miniatures, Japanese stamps, thick lip drawings, thin neck drawings.

6) Maide Arel

She was the pioneer in cubism and geometric abstraction among Turkish women artists. She applied figures in cubist style by dividing the figures into geometric forms and painting them. She also used local motifs.

7) Eren Eyuboglu

Eren Eyuboglu is the wife of famous Turkish painter/poet/author Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu. Bedri Rahmi described her wife as “I am an adventitious painter. Eren is a congenital painter”. She combined folkloric features with plastic values in her works, and she avoided ornamentation by adopting form perception and monumentalism.
